Hartmut Rohde teaches as a professor for viola at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin, which appointed him in 1993. He is also an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music London, where he regularly holds chamber music courses. He is a sought-after lecturer at international master classes in Europe, the USA and Australia as well as throughout Asia. His students have received awards at several international solo and chamber music competitions (ARD, Banff, Geneva, Berlin, etc.) and have positions at the Berlin and Munich Philharmonic, Berlin State Opera, BBC London, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hessischer Rundfunk and Semperoper Dresden. Since 1997 he has been artistic director of the International Max Rostal Competition for violin and viola, Berlin and juror of well-known competitions such as the ARD Munich International Competition.

The 16th Summer School of the International Mendelssohn Festival: Renowned artists give master classes and concerts at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater.
